After ten years with the corporation, he progressed through the ranks and got promoted to positions of considerable importance. Before leaving, he made sure he understood every aspect of the business and the sector.
Charles Reed Cagle departed Kinlaw in 1996 to launch his company in Dallas, Texas. He established Heartland Energy Inc. in 1997 as an unaffiliated energy company. The company's president and the chief executive officer was Mr. Cagle. In 2000, HEI changed its name to HEI Corporation and relocated its headquarters to Tulsa, Oklahoma, under new ownership. Mr. Cagle continued as the company's CEO until 2004 when he resigned from the position but retained his role as Chairman of the Board until 2006, when HEI Corporation filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection.

In 2006, he also started in the oil industry's drilling service sector with Mid Continent Drilling. He collaborated with Mr. Cagle to create a 2000-horsepower drilling rig. The company also has a mesa model 1500 drilling rig that can reach depths of up to 20,000 feet.
